Stress Reduction

October 8th, 2006 at 06:33am Under General Health+ Healthy Lifestyle+ Mental Health

There are many ways to reduce [tag]stress[/tag] in your life. Here are some suggestions if you find your tendency to worry if affecting the quality of your life mentally, emotionally and physically.

If you have a problem that needs to be taken care of, stop procrastinating and just do what needs to be done. It may be hard to face, but once it’s dealt with the stress in your life will go way down.

If you have toxic people in your life, that is, people who make you feel uncomfortable, bad about yourself, lacking in some way, jumpy, sad, essentially too much negative emotion, limit the amount of time you spend with those people, or cut them out of your life. It’s impossible to cut out certain people like beloved family members and co-workers, but you can in these cases, organize your life in such a way that you spend less time with them than you ordinarily would. And when you do have to spend time with a toxic person, schedule some time with a person whom you find uplifting afterward. It will be a positive antitode.

Try positive visualization and affirmations. There are loads of books on the market with instructions on how to use these powerful tools. Many of us run negative stress-producing thoughts without even realizing we’re doing it 24/7. It is possible to replace these with positive thoughts and mental pictures. In fact, it is imperative to do so to reduce stress and living a more rewarding life.

Stay away from caffeine. The temporary boost it gives you isn’t worth its cost in added jumpiness and roller coaster energy swings.

Start writing down your thoughts in a journal, both everything that worries you and everything you love about your life (that you can think of in one sitting). Then be done with it for the day, and go about living.

Get plenty of exercise. Exercise releases endorphins which make you feel good. It’s also very good for your overall health and can often pop you out of a worried state of mind. It’s also very beneficial for people who have depressive tendencies.

Try seeing a counselor or hypnotherapist. There’s nothing quite like having the attention of a trained professional, someone who listens well and has some insights and ideas for you to try. Each of us is unique, and good therapists realize this, knowing that what works to reduce stress for one person isn’t going to work for another person. It’s always good to get a helping hand.

Allow yourself a few minutes each day, a very limited time, to worry to the hilt. Exaggerate your fears and negative mental images.

Then when your time’s up. Let is go until your next scheduled worry session.

Take a break from the media for a while-TV, radio, newspaper, magazines. Read a good, uplifting book instead, and go for long walks. It’s amazing what even just a few days of this can do to improve your frame of mind. You might want to make it permanent.

How to Lower Blood Pressure

October 8th, 2006 at 06:13am Under Fitness+ General Health+ Healthy Lifestyle+ Heart

High blood pressure, also known as ‘hypertension’, is a very common problem for Americans.  Because having a high blood pressure greatly increases your chances of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes, its important to take what steps you can to lower your blood pressure.

Blood Pressure has been known to e cured naturally. Click here to find out more.

Doctors and health professionals agree that exercising and keeping an active life style is a great place to start to lower blood pressure.  Even 30 minutes of walking a day has been proven to help lower blood pressure.  Probably the greatest single reason why Americans suffer from high blood pressure more than most other countries is our overall sedentary lifestyle.

Also, maintaining a healthy weight is a great way to lower blood pressure.  This issue goes hand in hand with exercise.  Ideally, by boosting your workout you’ll also be helping yourself get to and maintain a healthy body weight.  Be careful what steps you take to lose weight however!  Excessive exercise can put your heart at risk, and the use of diet pills often raise blood pressure levels significantly.  If you already have heart disease or dangerously high blood pressure, make sure you exercise lightly and avoid diet pills.  Getting a lower blood pressure is important, but not worth having a heart attack over!

Another key change you should make right of the bat to help get to a lower blood pressure is greatly reducing the amount of salt in your diet.  The sodium from salt is well known for causing an increase in your blood pressure.  Products high in sodium should generally be avoided.

Lowering the amount of alcohol you drink, and quitting smoking completely will also do wonders to lower blood pressure.  Smoking can wreak havoc to your blood pressure, causing it to spike erratically, and even moderate amounts of alcohol consumption can elevate blood pressure throughout the day.  Though small amounts of alcohol may help raising your good cholesterol levels (effectively lowering your bad cholesterol), it’s a sort of double edged sword because it comes at the risk of higher blood pressure.

The most important step you should take to achieve a lower blood pressure is see a doctor.  Your doctor will probably tell you to do everything discussed here, but will also help you to determine if you need to be on a medication designed to lower blood pressure.  There are a number of such medications available today, and if your hypertension is excessive your doctor will probably start you off on one.

How to Get into Shape

October 8th, 2006 at 06:02am Under Fitness+ General Health+ Healthy Lifestyle

When one wonders how to get in shape, it seems there are a lot of answers, but very little results.

If someone can dream it up, you can find it for sale.

There are exercise programs, diet pills, fat burning pills, menu plans, support groups, and diet foods that can be mailed to your home. This will leave you wondering how to get in shape without losing your mind trying to decide what is best for you. If you want good answers, there is one tried and true source for information that you may have overlooked.

When you are wondering how to get in shape, you simply need to make an appointment with your doctor. The best thing about talking things over with a doctor is that they have no stake in anything, other than keeping you healthy. They aren’t trying to sell you anything, and they do want to see you live a better life. If there is anyone who can tell you how to get in shape safely, and for the long term, it is your doctor.

When you ask how to get in shape, the first thing your doctor is going to tell you is that you must ignore much of what you see on the market, and to find a new way to live. This means revamping your thoughts on food, and finding a way to make exercise a priority. They can tell you why fad diets fail, and why pills never seem to work. They may even have something already laid out for you to follow. They can tell you how many calories you need to eat for your weight, and how to go about formulating an exercise plan that is best for you.

Some doctors will send you to someone else when you are trying to figure out how to get in shape. Two very obvious places might be to a qualified dietician to help you formulate an eating plan, and to a health club to find a personal trainer. When you have the proper plan in place, your chances of success are much higher. Not only that, you will be learning a whole new lifestyle, which is essential to keeping the weight off.

Once you have had a taste of success, don’t be afraid to share your happiness and your success with others. There may be people in your life who are wondering how to get in shape, but they don’t have the answer yet. I do not, by any means, think you should go up to anyone and say that you notice they may need some help. If people see your success, they will come to you. When they do, go ahead and give them some advice, and even better, the name of your personal trainer.

Acne Problems

September 23rd, 2006 at 10:36am Under Healthy Lifestyle+ Skin Conditions

When I was thirteen years old, I had what could be described as “acne problems.”

That’s the understatement of the year! I was a “pizza face”, I looked like the surface of the moon. I felt insecure all the time about my appearance. I was practically afraid to leave the house.

Of course, feelings of insecurity are a common part of adolescence. It’s a difficult period of one’s life. The body is changing, different hormones are racing through the blood stream. Suddenly, the adult world, the real world, doesn’t seem so far away. And of course, for the first time I was noticing the ladies.

It was that which made the [tag]Acne[/tag] problems so embarassing. My friends, most of whom were also guys, didn’t really care if I had acne or not. To them, all that mattered was that I still hung out to ride bikes and play video games and pickup football. But with the girls, it was another matter. It’s just hard to feel confident at that age as it is, and even harder when you’re not confident about your appearance.

At first, I used cleansers and exfoliants, but these only seemed to make the problem worse. I’d put on the cleanser and the skin would turn red and dry, and begin to peel. Now even the parts of my skin without acne looked puffy and irritated!

I begged my mom to take me to the doctor, but she insisted I was fine just the way I was. I sure didn’t feel fine. Finally, she took me into the dermatologist. She barely looked at me, and handed me a prescription for my acne problem – a cream which I was supposed to put on my face. I took this to mean that it was a miracle cure-all, so effective in treating acne that it was obviously the right choice for everybody. And it did start working, almost immediately, but after a couple days, my skin problems were back, as bad as ever. I began to despair of ever finding a cure for my acne problem.

The strange thing is that, in all this time, no one had ever told me about the roll of nutrition in both causing and preventing acne. Fortunately, I had a friend who’s mother was a nutritionist. Almost overnight when she was thirteen, she developed terrible acne – even worse than mine. Then, a week later, as if by magic, it was almost completely gone. I asked her what was her secret, and she told me – it was as simple as avoiding greasy foods, and eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I was skeptical at first, but I figured it was workth trying.

I eliminated all unhealthy foods from my diet. It took longer than I would have thought, but I stuck with it. Within a month, my acne problems were mere acne inconveniences. And a few weeks after that, they were gone. I don’t know if this solution will work for everyone. Probably, for some people, even with a healthy diet the cleansers and medications are necessary. But if acne is making your life miserable, eating balanced, nutricious meals is certainly worth a try!

The benefits of Aerobic Exercise

September 23rd, 2006 at 10:21am Under Fitness+ General Health+ Healthy Lifestyle

[tag]Aerobic[/tag] exercise is one of the key ingredients to a healthy body.

While weight training is helpful in sculpting a great figure, aerobic exercise is the cornerstone to any workout and it is the foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

Not only can aerobics help you stay in shape, these exercises can also help your physical well being.

People who have diabetes benefit from aerobic exercise. The workout helps keep blood sugar levels on target. Simply taking a brisk walk three times each week will lower your blood sugar levels significantly. This will help you avoid complications caused by diabetes over the course of time. Such complications include heart disease and kidney failure.

Your heart will thank you, too. Healthy aerobic exercise will strengthen your heart muscle and this helps the muscle to pump more blood with each heartbeat. The benefit of this is your heart does not have to work as hard to get the same amount of blood through your system. The less blood that flows with each pump, the more beats per minute required to get the job done.

This improved blood flow benefits all part of your body as well. Good circulation is a boon to every inch, providing oxygen and nutrients to the cells. A strong heart provides the blood flow necessary to keep the body well-fed. It also insures that the body gets enough oxygen to help it function to its greatest capacity.

Your mood will also improve if you engage in consistent aerobic exercise. This type of exercise helps elevate your mood and it helps give your body the energy it needs to complete everyday activities with ease. Aerobic exercise is also a great way to relieve stress and anxiety.

Many women worry about osteoporosis as they get older. The signs of osteoporosis can become apparent in the early 30’s in many women. Adding weight bearing aerobic exercise into your weekly routine can help your body build strong bones. One of the most popular weight bearing exercises around today is walking.

Individuals who suffer from conditions like arthritis will benefit from low-impact or no-impact aerobic exercises like swimming and aqua aerobics. These kinds of workouts are very good to your joints. Many believe that these activities actually improve their mobility in the long run.

Of course, all of these benefits are of great interest to all of us. However, many of us like to engage in aerobic exercise because we want to manage our weight. Combining a healthy, well-balanced diet with aerobic activity can lead to the most popular benefit of all; a beautifully healthy body.

Nutritional Facts

August 30th, 2006 at 09:27pm Under General Health+ Healthy Lifestyle

[tag]Health[/tag] is on everyone’s minds these days.  We want to be healthy and live longer and put only good things into our bodies.

That can be hard if we don’t have the [tag]nutritional facts[/tag] of what is in the food that we are putting in our bodies.

Most things you buy at the store have labels, but first you need to learn how to read them.  And what about all those things that don’t have labels, like gummy bears and McDonalds burgers and fries?  The fact of the matter is that in these busy times eating out is a part of most of our lives.  Finding the nutritional facts about what we eat is essential to our health.

First, you’ll want to learn how to read labels on the [tag]food[/tag] that you buy in the store.  You’ll want to ask yourself what is important?  What do those numbers mean to me?  How can I tell if a company is being sneaky on their label?  Learning how to read the ingredients is important as well.  You may think something is relatively healthy until you look at the ingredients and find out that sugar is the first or second thing on the list.  What does that mean?  The higher an ingredient is on the list, the more of it is showing up in that food product.  The thing that is first on a list of ingredients has the biggest portion of this food’s content.  When you know about nutritional facts like these you can make better decisions about what to fuel your body with.

But how do you find nutritional facts for those things that don’t have labels on them?  Many fast food restaurants provide a hand-out of the nutritional facts in their stores.  If you don’t happen to think of it the next time you indulge in a little fast food, you can look online.  You can find up-to-date information online that will give you nutritional facts on your favorite unlabeled food item.  And that isn’t just fast food.  You can find thousands upon thousands of nutritional facts lists from manufacturers that produce the items that you use every day.

Knowing the nutritional facts about what you are feeding yourself and your family can help you to make more informed decisions when you are grocery shopping or when you are eating out.  It can help you find up-to-date nutritional information on your favorite snacks and overall, will make you feel better in your everyday activities.
