Understanding The Types Of Depression And The Various Options For Its Treatment

November 13th, 2008 at 11:16pm Under Diseases, Conditions and Treatments

Depression is complex. Depression can linger and grow for months or even years before being detected . Researches know that depression will afflict 15 million people in the USA annually. It is also estimated that less than a third will actually seek some form of treatment for their affliction. Those with the disease don’t even know it in many cases. It is normal in this day in age to fall prey to the stress that rules our lives. The road blocks in life have become more severe. Many families are surviving week to week. The recent economic crises has created even more pressure to obtain and hold a job. Stress leads to depression.

There are many different types of depression. Many of the types have similar names and meanings. There is mental depression, medical depression, clinical depression and manic depression. Severe depression refers to the most advanced form of the illness. Depression can result from a variety of causes. One school of thought holds that it’s due to chemical imbalances, simple biology. DNA also carries depression. If your mother and great grandmother suffered depression it’s possible you will too.

Common factors can lead to different types of depression. Depression is often the result of substance abuse. Both alcoholics and drug abusers can contract depression. The death of a family member can increase the chance for depression. History hasn’t been kind to mental depression. It was considered a personal fault before it was recognized as a disease. As a result treatment wasn’t applied in a way that could help the patient. Each depression phase has it’s own negative results. Therefore treatment requires early detection.

When depression becomes severe depression then medical care is a must. At this stage suicide is often the result. The calls for help have gone unnoticed and the avenues for hope are slipping away. Treatment is typically ‘talk therapy’ and anti-depressants. There are also support groups that offer a helping hand. Natural herbs have also been found to work. There are options available to those who suffer from all types of depression. Seek medical help if you or anyone you know shows signs of depression.

Learn how to cure depression.

Weight Loss Options For People Looking For Results

October 27th, 2008 at 12:09am Under Diseases, Conditions and Treatments

Overweight people struggle each and every day with their self esteem. They must try to fit into a society that seems to cater to thinner people even though there are many people who are overweight. There was a time when overweight people had no choice in the matter. They either remained overweight or they constantly tried a variety of the top 10 diets. It is not easy being overweight but if you are, then there are better weight loss options now available to you.

One of the best weight loss options to come about in the past few years is the Lap Band procedure. It is an ideal process for those who are morbidly obese or have significant health issues, due to their excess pounds. During the procedure, an adjustable gastric band is placed around the stomach to create a small pouch. It is far less invasive than previous weight loss surgeries and has a very high success rate.

But having this weight loss surgery is not enough. Patients must also learn how to live their lives in completely different ways. No longer can they rely on food as a source of comfort. The adjustable, gastric Lap Band will prevent them from overeating but it will not change their lives completely without due diligence. A steady diet and exercise routine must be followed in order to lose weight. This diet will start off as an all liquid diet to help the patient get used to the feeling of having the Lap Band. The newly sized stomach will only be able to handle a small amount of food; it will hold roughly two to four ounces of food at a time, depending on the size of the stomach pouch. Patients must completely revamp how they live their lives.

If you are considering the gastric Lap Band and need to know more about this weight loss cure procedure or simply need Lap Band support groups to help you through the procedure, then you can check out www.obesitylapbandsurgery.com. The website is designed to help people and potential patients to become familiar with the process, both pre and post op. You can find out information on how the procedure is performed and how your lifestyle must change in order to be successful.

One of the prerequisites to having the Lap Band procedure is that you must have exhausted other weight loss options. These are usually diet plans and exercise programs that you have tried for a year. Some people are successful with this method but there are far too many for which this type of program does not work for. They must turn to surgical methods in order to lose the weight. If you have found yourself dieting without any positive results, then a surgical weight loss procedure may be the best and safest bet for you.

Acupuncture For Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Fatigue

October 14th, 2008 at 04:37am Under Diseases, Conditions and Treatments

According to many western medical resources depression may be the response of the body to an overwhelming and constant stress that seems to the patient to be insurmountable. Regardless of the etiology of the depression, the majority of western MDs diagnose the patient’s condition as a depression.

The Role Of Acupuncture

Acupuncture, when used with Chinese herbs, can be a very effective alternative treatment for depression, anxiety, stress-induced fatigue and emotions swings resulting in long-term benefits. The difference with acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatment is that these treatments treat the root cause of the disease-the internal imbalance caused by the exposure to external stress. Such stress, if not treated, can cause energy “blockage” or changes of the neurotransmitters such as a decrease of brain concentration of the serotonin levels-resulting in symptoms such as anxiety, poor sleep, fatigue, and eventually, depression.

Some researchers are now leaning towards the theory that depression is physiological rather than psychological. The condition often comes about when the body lacks the necessary biochemical’s’ nutrients and vitamins to enable the mind and body to work in sync and thrive healthily.

A University of Arizona study on acupuncture and depression subjected a group 38 adults who were found to be experiencing bouts of depression ranging from the mild to the moderate stages. They all attended regular twice-weekly sessions lasting for 30 days’ with reducing frequency on the succeeding months. After the study period, most of those those treated say that they experienced no less than half of the symptoms have been reduced, if not totally eliminated.

The Conclusion Is:

Acupuncture is a Natural and Safe Method of Treatment for Depression, Anxiety and Stress. Depression has been thought of as a condition caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. Acupuncture is based on balancing the body’s Chi or “life energy”, which regulates spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance.

What Are The Main Causes Of Seasonal Depression

October 2nd, 2008 at 01:48am Under Diseases, Conditions and Treatments

What Is Seasonal Depression?

There are many different types of depression out there. Some is chemical, and it seems to happen for no reason what so ever. Some of it is related to an event and someone finds they can not find their way back to what they consider to be normal. Some is also a mixture of the two, with a life event triggering what was waiting to happen anyway. There is another type this that is called seasonal depression. As you can imagine, the season in question is definitely not summer.

Everyone who lives in a part of the world where the seasons change dramatically each year have some form of seasonal depression. However, for many, this is not something that is problematic, and would almost be considered a normal reaction to the loss of summer and the beginning of cold, dingy weather. Some have this mild seasonal depression at the beginning of winter, but they adjust. Others get it as the winter wears on whereas they were fine at first. It all depends on the person.

Some, however, get seasonal depression that may be severe. They have a hard time dealing with the shorter days of winter. The cold, snow, and darkness get to them. They become depressed and they can not shake it off. This may be just the seasonal depression, or in some cases, can be an existing case of mild depression that gets deeper thanks to the gloomy scenery outside the windows. The lack of sunlight is a problem. One treatment for any type of depression is sunlight therapy, so that explains why that can hurt anyone who is prone to these problems.

For those that find seasonal depression will make existing depression worse, there are a few answers. They can use the light therapy to help them get the feel good vibes we get from bright light and sunlight. They can also see that their medications, if they are on any, are adjusted to change with the seasons. Anyone who is on medications for depression should see their doctors at least four times a month to discuss how they are feeling and if an adjustment is needed. Some can even self adjust with the permission of their doctors.

Those that only have seasonal depression can do a number of things. The best thing to do is to see a doctor if it is having an effect on the quality of life. Some can deal with it as they feel that it is going to be over when the winter wanes and warmer weather comes about. Those that know that a lack of sunlight and the shorter, darker days are the problem can make an effort to get more sunlight or use light therapy. Each person that is experiencing seasonal depression should decide what they should do, but there is no harm in talking with someone if it is getting out of control.

Highs And The Lows Of Seasonal Depression

October 1st, 2008 at 11:19pm Under Diseases, Conditions and Treatments

“Do you have SAD?” No, that’s not a grammatical error that is supposed to be “Are you sad?” It is SAD, as in Seasonal Affective Disorder, or popularly known as seasonal depression.

It’s the season to be jolly, and now it’s the season to be depressed. That is how people with seasonal affective disorder live their lives. As the cycle of the year goes round like a wheel, so does their mood. So what is it really about seasonal depression and why is it so popular among people?

Highs and the Lows of Seasonal Depression
Seasonal depression is depression that occurs each year at a certain season or period of time. The thing is that it occurs at the same season each year. As soon as that time of the year comes, you get that ‘I hate my life today’ kind of feeling.

Some people usually start having seasonal depression at the start of fall or winter that ends during spring or summer. While there is also a rare kind of seasonal depression that starts during late periods of spring or early parts of summer then ends when fall comes around.

Exclusive Symptoms of Seasonal Depression

Seasonal depression, like the general kind of depression has the same symptoms of having extreme sadness, irritability, and too much anxiousness, loss of interest in daily activities, sudden unsociability, and concentration problems. However, there are other symptoms that are exclusive to a certain season only.

Seasonal Depression
For example, during winter depression, the added symptoms are fatigue; sleep cravings, low energy levels, weight gain, food cravings, and desire for solitary confinement. People who have summer seasonal depression usually experience weight loss, decreased appetite and sleeping problems.

What Causes Seasonal Affective Disorder?

There is no known exact cause of seasonal affective disorder. However, studies show that latitude has high influence on the condition, due to sunlight changes. It is proposed that when you are not exposed to sunlight that much, your body’s biological clock slows down your sleep, mood, and hormones. However, with light exposure your biological clock can reset and go back to its normal pace.

Another proposed cause of seasonal affective disorder is that people who have this condition have altered neurotransmitters, responsible for the chemical imbalances in their brains. It is also believed that subsequent light exposure can correct these chemical imbalances. More on Depression Facts.

Seeking A Depression Treatment

October 1st, 2008 at 07:12pm Under Diseases, Conditions and Treatments

A number of people believe that there are less and less people coming to the doctor’s office for depression treatment. Probably, it is because they lack the feeling of acceptance necessary for them to acknowledge their illness. Financial problems and lack of family support may also be factors in why there are fewer people visiting clinics for depression treatment. However tight the situation may be, patients suffering from this disorder should put in mind that therapy is needed in order to lessen the severity of their illness.

Seeking a Depression Treatment
Depression treatment is reliant on many factors; this includes the severity of the problem, the insistence of symptoms and the person’s individual history with the illness. The treatment is divided into three forms which we will tackle in separate issues.

Depression Treatment: Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is otherwise known as the talking therapy. This involves the patient and the specialist together in one area. The specialist serves as the client’s exhaust and vent for his feelings. Together, they aid each other in knowing and discovering what the problems are and what could have triggered the depression to appear. Also, they decide the kind of depression treatment needed and preferred by the client. In this way, the patient is guided accordingly and is given enough room for independence and self-guidance.

Depression Treatment
Together with psychotherapy, medication is needed to control the hormones responsible for depression. The medications given are considered to be a successful depression treatment. The medication therapy is used in combination with other therapies that will help the patient see his inner strengths and use that enthusiasm to cope with the illness. However, compliance with the treatment regimen is a must for this kind of therapy.

Depression Treatment: Hospitalization and Electroconvulsive Therapy

In severe types of clinical depression, hospitalization should be required. The length of stay at the hospital depends on the recuperating process of the patient. Hospitalization and electroconvulsive therapy are opted as a depression treatment if the patient no longer responds to the medication given to him. The exact mechanism as to how the ECT works was and is never understood; but it is believed to be affecting the level of neurotransmitters in the human body.

The most successful evaluation for a client with clinical depression is seeing him cope with the illness. Once you are able to see a person muddle through both the internal and external struggles, then you can say that the chances of reoccurrence would unquestionably be low. More about Depression facts.
