Important Facts About Lap Band Weight Loss Surgery

November 30th, 2008 at 12:44am Under Health and Fitness

If you are overweight, then chances are good you have considered weight loss surgery options as a way to rid yourself of those extra pounds. But do you know about the different surgeries that are available to help you lose weight? There is the Lap Band procedure but there is also a procedure known as the Duodenal Switch surgery = KEYWORD. If you are going to have a DS, then you have to know the facts about this surgery so that you can make an informed decision.

The Duodenal Switch is also called a DS or a Biliopancreatic Diversion with a DS. It is an invasive procedure that not only involves reducing the size of the stomach but it also reroutes food in a different manner than through the large and small intestines. In this procedure, the stomach is reduced to roughly one-third to one-fifth of its normal size. The small intestine is changed so that there are two different pathways. The food is taken to the large intestine and the bile is routed through a different section. The goal is to lessen the amount of time the body has to absorb calories and to limit the amount of fat that is absorbed.

  • DS surgery would require a major operation in order to be reversed
  • involves reducing the size of the stomach
  • invasive procedure

There are some disadvantages to this form of weight loss surgery, as opposed to the Lap Band surgery = KEYWORD2, which is less invasive. A small hole is cut in the abdomen and a scope is inserted to place a gastric Lap Band into place along the upper portion of the stomach. The Lap Band is then tightened to make a small pouch. The DS operation requires a larger incision and a more invasive procedure to the stomach and the intestines. This means that there is a longer hospital stay and a longer recovery time.

You must also consider the fact that the gastric Lap Band is reversible, whereas the DS surgery would require a major operation in order to be reversed. That means an even longer time spent under the surgeon’s knife and a longer stay in the hospital. Many people have had severe reactions to the surgery and find themselves constantly at the doctor’s office to remove blockages.

Regardless of what weight loss surgery option = KEYWORD3 you choose, it is imperative that you listen to your doctor as he or she reviews all of the advantages and disadvantages of the Duodenal Switch to you. You will need to pay careful attention to the gastric bypass diet and follow all of the physician’s rules. The same thing applies for the gastric Lap Band procedure. Make an informed decision and know all of the facts before you make a decision.

Teen Weight Loss

November 29th, 2008 at 03:44am Under Health and Fitness

Are you looking for teen weight loss struggling with obesity that is both healthy and simple? The following 5 tips will help them lose weight in a manner that’s not only healthy, but also sustained.

1. Make it a habit, not a “diet”

Crash diets don’t work. Period. In fact, people who lose a lot of weight quickly tend to not only gain it back just as fast, but also add a bit extra. Besides the obvious frustration of failure, this weight gain/loss yo yo effect is not good for the heart.

So, the first step to weight loss programs should be committing to a lifelong habit of healthy habits and a gradual weight loss that doesn’t exceed 1 to 2 pounds each week.

2. Cut Down on Sugary Drinks

Soda and sugary juices are killers for a young person’s weight. One can of soda usually consists of 130 to 180 calories, which is over 10 percent of one’s daily requirement and doesn’t even take into account the impact that sugar has on the body’s metabolism.

If your child is a fizzy drink addict, try cutting out one can per day at the beginning and replace it with water or sugar-free juice. Eventually, work up to a soda-free lifestyle.

3. Get Moving

Teens typically need about 60 minutes of physical activity per day for general health. That doesn’t mean they need to do all 60 minutes at once or spend the entire hour sprinting. It simply means the body needs to be routinely moving throughout the day.

So, consider having your son or daughter put the car ride to school aside and replace it with walking or biking to classes most days. Or alternatively, instead of plopping down in front of the television after school, they could develop a new habit of shooting a few hoops in the driveway, jumping rope or walking to the mall with friends.

4. Eat Breakfast

Thin people eat breakfast. It gives one’s metabolism a major boost in the morning, meaning the effort will help to burn more calories throughout the day. It also assists in stopping your teen from loading up on empty calories at lunch or during a mid-morning sugar crash.

Instead, opt for healthy breakfast like a bowl of cereal, a bit of fruit and bread or some granola sprinkled over yogurt.

5. The next time you head out grocery shopping, ask your teen to join you. Talk together about avoiding the pizzas and chips, and instead purchase healthy snacks like baby carrots, grapes, cherry tomatoes, pretzels, string cheese, hummus or other easy after-school snacks that are tasty, but healthy.

The truth is, you don’t need an instant-fix teen weight loss instead, you need a sustained lifestyle change. That means snacking smart, eating breakfast, getting moving and cutting out empty liquid calories

Causes Of Depression Still Not Known

November 28th, 2008 at 11:13pm Under Health and Fitness

Let there be no doubt that depression is a serious mental illness that sometimes requires months and years of treatment on the road to a cure
. Millions of Americans across the United States are affected by depression each and every year. The situation becomes worse because only one third of those who suffer depression ever get treated.

Depression has always been classified as a mental affliction. Therefore, many Americans choose not to be placed into that category. They would rather deal with the problem on their own than risk being stereotyped should they seek assistance. Depression is more common- place than you might think and it will not go away on its own.

Causes of Depression
So, what causes depression? The answer isn’t that simple because there are many elements to depression. There are so many things factored into the cause of this disease.

Here are a few of the parts of depression. A chemical imbalance is widely considered to be the main cause for depression. Why does this chemical problem in the brain happen? Generally the causes are internal – biological issues, genetic disposition, mental problems – but there are external causes as well.

Doctors sometimes don’t find the root cause, which is true for many patients. If diagnosis of another serious medical condition happens, sometimes people become depressed.

Another cause of depression can be the emotional pain felt after losing a loved one. In many cases the loss can be very traumatic. Depression often follows sexual or physical abuse, or emotional attacks. Substance abuse, either drug or alcohol, can also cause depression.

People’s mental states are fragile. If exposed to the wrong pressures, depression can result. In many cases depression is passed on genetically. A strong correlation between family history of depression and current depression has been found . There are even some prescribed medications that can bring on depression. Studies and tests show a casual relation between many high blood pressure medications and depression.

Depression can result from stress. In our lives many events and elements can cause stress. It’s not well known, but it’s true, that stress can result from the pressures associated with positive events such as a new, high paying job.

People tend to stress when they face the unknown, like a new job or new financial obligations. Arguments with family members, disputes with business clients can both cause stress. Some people have a low threshold for stress. They’re affected by events and activities that to others seem to not be stressful. Doctors first look for cause when seeking a treatment for depression. Seek medical help if you or a loved one suffer from depression.

Inactivity Linked To Increased Cardiovascular Risk In Depressed Heart Patients

November 28th, 2008 at 06:00am Under Depression

Researchers studying heart patients in the US found that changes in health behaviours, and lack of physical activity in particular, might explain the increased risk of cardiovascular events seen in patients with coronary heart disease who also had symptoms of depression.
