Weight Loss: 6 Ways of Controlling Your Food Habits

September 30th, 2008 at 05:00am Under weight loss

You might be aware of the fact that controlling your food habits is one surefire way to keep your weight in check. It is however, easier said than done! It is a known fact that people become overweight by overeating. Naturally then, they would become slimmer by undereating. But how do you control your eating habits? In this article I will discuss about six ways in which you can control your food intake.

1. Eat only when you are hungry: That is how it should be, but too many times people eat just for the joy of it. However, the very first step towards weight loss is to learn to eat only when your stomach growls and otherwise not! Which means that if you are eating your office lunch and are already full when someone offers you a burger, you should say 'NO' to it. If you are at a party and you think you have eaten enough and if one of your friends offers you "something more", you should turn it down. When you are eating your dinner, you should stop eating as soon as you feel full!

2. If you are eating for comfort, taste every bite. Even with all the necessary precautions you take to control your food intake, you may still want to eat for pleasure. If you are eating for pleasure, you should taste and enjoy every bite of your food; this will satiate your food cravings with very little food intake!

3. If you think you have really eaten one of the 'forbidden foods', don't be harsh or mean to yourself. Love yourself and try to understand why you ate what you ate. Sometimes it pays to be curious with yourself and give yourself the benefit of doubt, instead of being overtly judgmental.

Remember that it is possible to lose weight by being kind to yourself. As a matter of fact, you will seldom be able to lose weight if you beat your head against the wall for every little fault of yours.

4. If you eat for emotional reasons, try to stop that practice by feeling your feelings. Whether you are happy, sad or angry, try to "feel" those feelings intensely instead of trying to quench them with food. Remember that food isn't and can never be a source of comfort for the mind; useless eating can only make you heavier!

5. Stop searching for better things and better environment and stop waiting for things to happen. Stop searching for a better house, a better wife or a better job. Try to be happy with yourself. Love and enjoy your life the way you want instead of waiting for certain things to happen. Remember that "things" never make us happy; happiness always resides within us!

6. Even though you should try to discipline yourself and stick to the diet plan your doctor has recommended for you, occasionally it will happen that you will cheat and binge on something delicious. When you do so, don't be mean and angry with yourself; instead, write down about each type of food that you ate, and why.

Just because you haven't succeeded in losing weight in the past doesn't mean that you will fail this time too! If you take my advice and follow the six tips above, there is no reason why you cannot get rid of that extra belly fat!

Surefire Signs of Depression

September 30th, 2008 at 05:00am Under Depression

Depression is a common mental disorder in our society today. However, we often do not recognize the symptoms of depression and pass them off as symptoms of lethargy or even fatigue! But do we really know that we are suffering in depression in silence all this while? Through this article we will look into some of the symptoms often associated with depression and it would be great if you can look through the symptoms and identify with any of them. If you do, do not hesitate to seek help immediately as chronic depression can be very harmful not only to our emotions but may cause other disorders or problems.

Below are some of the symptoms linked with depression:
- feeling tired mentally or physically
- feeling empty, anxious for nothing, always being sad
- having no interest in anything
- Always crying with no reason
- change in sleep patterns, wanting to sleep more
- eating disorders (anorexia)
- Decreased sex drive or sexual dysfunction
- Constant death or suicide thoughts; attempted suicide
- Body aches that would not go away
- Unable to concentrate, poor
- Easily irritated and stressed

With these symptoms more or less stated clearly, let us look into some of them in greater detail.
Fatigue in depression will cause a person to feel that he or she is always tired and weary despite of how long you have slept. You feel just as tired in the morning as when you have just gone to bed the previous night. You just feel like doing everything slowly, taking your own time to complete your tasks.

In depression, it is almost inevitable that a person would suffer from low self-esteem. You would feel worthless and feel as if that your existence on earth was a mistake and wished you had never been born. You also suffer from having excessive guilt that you laden yourself with for no reason.

Being easily irritated, agitated and angered are also common signs of depression. You feel restless and easily get annoyed by things that do not normally affect you at all. You feel that everyone has a grudge against you and wants to get back at you for it.

Depression can be kept under control if we are able to spot it before it gets full blown, just like any other medical condition. Being equipped with the knowledge of the signs of depression, we can no doubt be a help to friends or family members who may suffer from depression.

Are Low Cholesterol Diets able to Lower Unhealthy Cholesterol Levels?

September 29th, 2008 at 05:00am Under Cholesterol

Low cholesterol diets tend to be under much skepticism over the supposed effects and results they should bring, but is it really true that low cholesterol diets can lower unhealthy levels of cholesterol? The good news is, it is very true that low cholesterol diets can indeed lower our cholesterol levels, but the catch is that, certain kinds of high cholesterol problems, such as those caused through genetic heritage, may not be totally cured. Nonetheless, most of the time, such diets have been proven to be effective in lowering cholesterol levels.
There are different kinds of food that have the properties of reducing cholesterol levels. One of such kind of food is soy protein. After thoroughly analyzing the health properties that soy protein contains, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) even claimed that soy protein can help lower the risk of having heart diseases. However, it is recommended that one has to consume about 25 grams per day to be able to experience the benefits that soy protein promises to possess.

Nuts also have cholesterol lowering properties and through numerous studies, it has been proven that a diet that consists of a regular portion of nut intake can increase the benefit of lowering bad cholesterol by more than 100 percent, whilst helping to sustain the amount of good cholesterol in a person’s body!

Beta Glucan, a key element that reduces cholesterol can be found in large quantities in oats and barley. Being rich in beta glucan, oats and barley are also effective in reducing cholesterol levels in our body. The proposed amount of oats and barley to be consumed each day is approximately 3 full cups of such grain.

Fruits and vegetables are also great at reducing cholesterol also, there is a variety of such fruits and vegetables thus we need not subject ourselves to a torturous daily intake of same kinds of fruits and vegetables each day. Fruits such as apples, berries, apricots all contain the nutrients and properties that have the ability to reduce bad cholesterol in our bodies. Vegetables such as carrots and cabbage are also great inclusions into your diet when we seek to reduce our cholesterol levels. However, it has been suggested that we need to at least consume up to five servings of fruits and vegetables for it to have the desired effect you want it to have on your cholesterol levels.

Thus, it is without a doubt that low cholesterol diets have significant impact on us if we do want to reduce our cholesterol levels. However, be informed that it is not sufficient just to have a change in diet, but rather a change in diet has to be backed up by a change in lifestyle, before one can see significant change to their cholesterol levels.

Do Low Cholesterol Meals Give Us a Healthy Cholesterol Level?

September 28th, 2008 at 05:00am Under Cholesterol

“You are what you eat!” as quoted from Dr Gillian McKeith has often been termed as the mantra for food lovers like you and me. However, is it necessarily true for all cases,or it is only a phrase we quote often to satisfy our own craving for food. Low cholesterol meals such as those with huge servings of oats, barley added with a generous serving of soy protein, fruits and vegetables; are they really the concoction for a healthy cholesterol level?

Instead of drinking coffee each day, why not try 1 or 2 glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice? Especially if the juice contains plant sterols that have cholesterol lowering properties, it can actually promote lowered cholesterol levels in your body. Not only do you get to enjoy the sweetness and the great taste of orange, you enjoy the benefits of lower cholesterol that it brings. However, if you are not an orange lover, other frit juices namely cranberry juice, grapefruit juice or grape juice would do fine. Actually, any other citric fruit would actually bring the benefits of reduced cholesterol in our bodies! However, if you are such a coffee freak, another suggestion would be to use paper filters when brewing your favorite cup of coffee. These filters would ensure that substances that would cause high cholesterol would be not left inside your coffee.

Also, instead of using normal cooking oil, use olive oil generously during cooking or for salad dressings! Olive oil has been proven to contain lesser amounts of saturated fat that is one of the main causes of high cholesterol. Besides using it for cooking purposes, people from Spain, Italy have regularly used olive oil in place of butter to spread on bread. Due to such a custom, is has resulted in these places having the least amount of heart disease cases in the whole of Europe.

Not forgetting seafood, it has been scientifically proven that mackerel, salmon and even sardines and many other kinds of fish contain huge amounts of omega 3 fatty acids. With the consumption of these fishes daily, we fulfill our bodies daily needed intake of omega 3 fatty acids that are also able to lower cholesterol levels to a healthy level.
From the various examples given above, we can see the obvious benefits that a low cholesterol meal can give us, but it is not necessarily true that just by having a healthy diet of low cholesterol products, we would have a healthy cholesterol level. Besides a good diet, we need to have a lifestyle of exercise and avoid vices such as smoking or excessive consumption of liquor. Only when these conditions are met, one can have a lowered chance of having high cholesterol, but they are still not protected fully from the possibility of contracting diseases associated with high cholesterol.
